Two Holiday Calendars Meet at the Kiawah Gate: A Briars Creek Guide to Thanksgiving Through Christmas

November 5, 2026

On Friday, Nov. 27, Santa has two appointments on either side of the Kiawah gate. Starting at 10 a.m. he poses for photos at Santa's Surf Shack on the Freshfields Village Green. At 1:30 p.m. he reads stories at the Night Heron Pavilion on Kiawah Island. Both events are complimentary, and both are aimed at families. The difference that matters for a household driving down Betsy Kerrison Parkway from Briars Creek is the security gate between them.

Freshfields Village describes itself as sitting at the crossroads of Johns, Seabrook and Kiawah Islands. Its entrance is two miles from the Kiawah Island Resort Front Gate, and it is "open to the public." Night Heron Park is behind that gate. This season the gateway holidays run on two calendars, and the one on the public side of the line runs from Thanksgiving week until the Saturday before Christmas.

The line on Kiawah Island Parkway

The Kiawah Island Community Association says plainly that Kiawah is a private gated community, and that you must obtain a gate pass to enter through the Main Gate. In December 2025, KICA's board passed a new Roadway and Gate Access Policy. In its words, the policy was meant to "ensure full KICA control of all access types, address non-member access to the island, and create a clear and consistent process for gate access." KICA's February 2026 update said the association was still adjusting its processes to comply.

Gate passes are handled by KICA, so anyone planning around a resort event at Night Heron Park or The Sanctuary should check KICA's gate-access page before loading the car. For event details, the resort's Christmas page lists 843.768.6001. Freshfields events need neither step.

Thanksgiving Friday, side by side

Nov. 27 is the one day the two calendars fully overlap. Here is how they compare:

Nov. 27, 2026 Freshfields Village Green Night Heron Park, Kiawah Island
Santa Photos at Santa's Surf Shack, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Story Time with Santa, 1:30 to 2 p.m.
Music The Island Duo, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Dave Landeo, 2 to 5 p.m. Rick Hubbard's Great American Christmas Kids Show, 9:30 to 11 a.m.
Main event Letter station and crafts all day Christmas Spectacular Festival, noon to 4 p.m.
Animals None listed Crosswind Farm's Holiday Farm Snuggles, 2:30 to 4 p.m.
Gate Outside the gate Inside the gate

The resort's Friday lineup is longer. Its festival lists face painting, a photo booth, Santa's sleigh with elves, inflatables, and a Crosswind Farm pen with a horse, a camel, goats, bunnies and a llama. It is also a single day of programming. Freshfields starts its season four days earlier and keeps going after the resort's Friday ends.

The Village Green's version runs four weeks

Read in order, the public calendar at Freshfields begins the Monday of Thanksgiving week and ends six days before Christmas:

  1. Monday, Nov. 23, 1 to 5 p.m. The Thanksgiving Farmers Market brings local produce, prepared foods and holiday crafts. Its timing makes it a last stop for anything the Thursday table still needs.
  2. Friday, Nov. 27, through Sunday, Nov. 29. Santa photos run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, then 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Live music plays Friday, and DJ Ben Felton plays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
  3. Saturday, Nov. 28, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Holiday Market sets up, and the St. Johns Fire Truck parks on site for the third annual "Stuff a Truck."
  4. Nov. 27 through Dec. 18. The Letters to Santa mailbox stands near the Village Green Christmas trees, and letters must be in by Dec. 18.
  5. Saturdays, Dec. 12 and Dec. 19, at 6 p.m. Complimentary outdoor Holiday Movies on the Village Green show The Grinch on the 12th and Elf on the 19th.

The last two items give this calendar its length. The mailbox keeps the Village Green part of the season for three weeks after the Santa weekend ends, and the two movie nights carry it to within a week of Christmas.

Saturday the 28th, at the vendor tables

The Holiday Market draws on producers from across the Lowcountry and the state, and its vendor roster is full. Freshfields says the market is "fully booked for the season." The published list includes:

  • Mary Ann's Sweet Grass Baskets: handmade sweetgrass baskets woven by Mary Ann, a craft the listing describes as passed down from generation to generation
  • Nanna's Nuts: flavored nuts and brittle in the style of Nanna's spiced pecans
  • Charleston Spice Company: organic, small-batch, hand-blended herbs and spices
  • Sweet Mae's: small-batch original pimento cheese from the chef-owner the listing calls "Charleston's Ghost Pepper Gal"
  • R and R Acres and B&E Farms: pasture-raised proteins and seasonal produce, with B&E coming up from its family farm in Yemassee
  • Molly Joseph Fine Art: a mother-daughter studio whose work includes painted maps, family recipes and large-scale paintings of Lowcountry birds
  • Lowcountry Dog Treats: small-batch treats that are lab-analyzed and carry Certified South Carolina Products status
  • Conservancy of the Sea Islands: the accredited land trust founded in 1997, which reports more than 3,900 acres preserved across Johns, Kiawah and Seabrook Islands

For a household on a Johns Island golf property, the last name is the one closest to home. The Conservancy's table puts the land trust working on these three islands right on the Village Green, among the kettle corn and candles.

The same morning, the St. Johns Fire Truck's "Stuff a Truck" drive makes that Saturday the busiest single day on the public calendar. Santa photos, the DJ, the market and the fire truck all share the Green from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What stays behind the resort's door

Past Thanksgiving Friday, the resort's holiday season gets narrower. Its Christmas page lists The Sanctuary's tree lighting, with cookies, cocoa and live carols. It also lists Santa's arrival at The Sanctuary and a holiday chocolate display made by Executive Pastry Chef Jordan Snider and his team. On Friday, Dec. 11, the Jingle Shell 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run starts at 3 p.m. from Night Heron Park, and every participant must register.

Its holiday dining runs on reservations and, in one case, on guest status. Tomasso at Turtle Point serves its Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day, the resort says reservations for Kiawah's Grand Christmas Day Buffet at Jasmine Porch "are limited to guests of The Sanctuary." Read together, the resort's season grows more tied to guests as Christmas gets closer, while the Freshfields schedule stays public through Dec. 19.

Two dates off the gateway

Two events away from Betsy Kerrison Parkway frame the Freshfields run, one opening before it and one falling in its middle.

The first opens the day after this post goes up. The 37th annual Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park runs nightly from Friday, Nov. 13, through Dec. 31, 5:30 to 10 p.m. It covers a three-mile drive with more than 750 light displays. Charleston County Parks sets ticket prices by expected attendance, so the night you choose determines what you pay per vehicle:

Night category Advance, per vehicle At the gate, per vehicle
Green $15 $25
Yellow $25 $35
Red $30 $45

A family that buys online for a green night pays $15. The same family arriving at the gate on a red night pays three times that. The county posts each night's color on its ticket calendar and recommends buying in advance and choosing a green or yellow night. On the festival's second night, Saturday, Nov. 14, A Very Merry Oyster Roast runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the same park. It costs $65 per person, includes food, drinks, live music and Festival of Lights admission, and benefits the Charleston County Parks Foundation.

The second falls between the Freshfields Santa weekend and its movie nights. On Saturday, Dec. 5, the Sea Islands Chamber of Commerce holds its 12th annual Homegrown Holiday Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Johns Island County Park, 2662 Mullet Hall Road. The chamber says the bazaar has drawn more than 100 local vendors over the years and more than 1,000 local shoppers. It stays on Johns Island and lands on the Saturday between the Freshfields Santa weekend and the first movie night.

Put together, the public season from Briars Creek needs no gate pass. It starts with the lights on James Island on Nov. 13, moves to the Freshfields market and Santa weekend, then the bazaar on Mullet Hall Road, and reaches Elf on the Village Green on Dec. 19, while the Festival of Lights keeps running through Dec. 31.
